Concentrate feed complements the basal ration selectively

Concentrate feed supplies concentrated energy and nutrients and can complement the basal ration available on the farm. The appropriate ingredients and inclusion rates depend on the animal species, stage of production, forage quality, actual feed intake, health status and farm objectives. A general standard mix cannot reliably reflect these differences.

Each ingredient group has a different function

  • Energy sources primarily supply starch, sugars or fat and influence the energy density.
  • Protein sources supplement the supply of crude protein and amino acids.
  • Structurally effective ingredients influence particle distribution, intake and integration into the total ration.
  • Minerals, vitamins and authorised micro-ingredients are dosed according to requirements and with particular accuracy.

Raw-material data provide the foundation

Nutrient content, moisture, bulk density, flow characteristics and particle size can vary between harvests and delivery lots. Representative samples and appropriate analyses provide a more reliable basis than table averages alone. Cleanliness, storage condition and traceability are also part of raw-material assessment.

Grinding degree and dosing affect the entire process

The grinding degree affects particle surface area, flowability and mixing behaviour. Large differences in particle size or density increase the risk of segregation during conveying, storage or discharge. Every major ingredient and micro-ingredient must be weighed reproducibly; small inclusion rates require an appropriate dosing and incorporation strategy.

Homogeneity is not achieved merely by mixing for longer

Mixer type, fill level, ingredient addition sequence and mixing time are matched to the formulation, bulk densities and batch size. Mixing times that are too short can cause uneven batches. Unnecessarily long mixing times increase energy consumption and wear and, where material properties are unfavourable, can promote renewed segregation. The appropriate time is determined through documented process verification, not by assumption.

Check and document quality

Weighing checks, batch records, defined sampling and – where required – testing of mixing homogeneity help identify deviations at an early stage. Conveying routes, intermediate storage and filling must be included in the assessment because a good mix can segregate again after leaving the mixer.
